Introducing Lucky Iron Fish

How do you combine social justice and innovation AND help to create a tiny invention that has a huge impact? Gavin Armstrong, CEO and founder of Lucky Iron Fish, spoke to us about his experiences with this challenge, about how to run a successful socially conscious enterprise, and why designing for good can never be an afterthought.

Lucky Iron Fish is a carefully formulated health innovation that aims to help improve health and wellbeing for the 50% of Cambodians who suffer from iron deficiency. It comes in the form of a small metal fish infused with nutritional iron, and can be added to stews, soups and other liquid based dishes to increase the iron content of the food. It is also a product that, from cradle to grave, has been thoughtfully designed to be reusable, compact and sustainable. This invention has already had a huge impact on the lives of those living in third world countries.

We found Gavin’s story of how he created a business model that is profitable, socially good, and environmentally conscious to be both fascinating and inspiring. It is a morality tale about how every aspect of good design has to be addressed if designers are going to make a positive impact on the world. In Gavin's own words, "I am firm believer that businesses have a responsibility to solving some of the world's greatest challenges. And one of the biggest challenges we face today is that of hidden hunger. Over 1/3 of the world's population go to bed malnourished."
